Memoria Vacia: An exploration in Latino Trip Hop

Memoria Vacia: An exploration in Latino Trip Hop.

Collectively as a society we have given each other imaginary roles depending our cultural treats. Usually we do not associate Latin music with melancholic or somewhat chill experiences. So, it is very uncommon we know about Latinamerican Trip Hop acts, let alone associate some of the most creative artists from different genres doing it.

Memoria Vacia destroys all preconceptions one may still have about how or where Latino artists belong to.

Some of us grew up listening to Fania but also Portishead, Massive attack, Tricky, Morcheeba and so on.

Therefore, Memoria Vacia walks the fine line of having the vibe while feeling cohesively fresh and Latin.

CADA DIA TRAE SU PROPIO AFAN is a 9 track experience of how latino artists/producers interpret trip hop.

This trip hop experience has artists from all sorts of musical backgrounds, starting with the one and only LIDO PIMIENTA whose Neo-folklore work gets all the highlights, but she has been always a lover of all kinds of music and back there in Colombia she had collabs with all sort of genres, from pioneers of the neo-cumbia to more punk related music.

She is the one who opens the compilation singing a track in English called SO FAKE which is also quite unusual for the Colombo-Canadian artist.

Right after, Memoria Vacia gives us another Latin Trip hop approach on Teach Me having the Fania vibe locked in at the end without losing the melancolic trippy vibe.

If you ever knew about PUNK from Latin America, then ODIO A BOTERO, or DEFENZA must have popped out every now and then. So, having them doing a trip hop track that could be better described as having the raw energy of a funeral.

Is it sad or is it a cathartic release? Be you the one who decides.

Now, if you know about Latin obscure rock, without any doubt you recognize ROBI DRACO ROSA. So, his music and his legacy has been influential to the highest degree on many of us. This influence doesn’t go unnoticed on our third track, CAMINO LARGO, performed by perhaps the most prolific Death Metal singer from the whole continent: KIKE VALDERRAMA. A massive track.

Afroperuvian music can also be extremely fit for Trip Hop, in fact, some of Novalima remixes flirt with it; so it becomes no surprise that Caballo jumps on the steering wheel driving this afroperuvian triphop to the resistance camp of MACHETE.

Trinidad & Tobago are part of Caribbean diaspora and usually left out of the Latin music train as they, deservedly so, have their own thing. But like the best cousins Caribbean music and Latin music are one and only should we want it. So, Mr Shammi gives us his track back up with a full force groove armada feeling.

Talking about that faction of the genre, JUDAS, the seventh track of the album totally fits LATINO RESISTE mentality while having MEMORIA VACIA trip hop’s signature sound.

Originally released under projects like Sehveeneetahlahn EPs, featuring a medieval/fantasy Elvish aesthetic with lyrics sung in an artificial/constructed musical language, we drop Seh-heh Dahnsehvlehn.

Last but not least, CADA DIA TRAE SU PROPIO AFAN, has the literal sound of an imaginary collaboration between CONTROL MACHETE and ORQUESTA DE RECAMARAS DEL CARTUCHO.
