The Hidden Raves of Champetesburg

For decades confined to Colombia’s poor coastal regions and condemned by conservative politicians as violent and corrupting, the African-Latin fusion sound of champeta is finally cracking into the mainstream.

Obviously the fact half of the planet saw it at the Superbowl when Shakira danced to it and made a whole challenge that gave a completely new audience that otherwise would have never knew about this hidden genre in the Afro-Colombian community.

There are several theories about the origin of the word champeta, but it likely stems from the champeta knife used by workers in Cartagena’s Bazurto market. In the ‘70s, these workers would meet regularly to listen to African music on picós, but over the decades the word has been

deliberately sullied by conservatives seeking to attach connotations of violence to the music. This kind of prejudice against the country’s black population has stifled the genre’s growth over the years, with Colombian politicians even attempting to enforce a national ban on champeta, accusing the music of encouraging violence and teenage pregnancy.

In fact, our brother Lucas Silva, who did 2 compilations with us and owns perhaps the most significant Afro-Colombian label: PALENQUE RECORDS says about champeta’s significant raise to become Shakira’s superbowl halftime most talked dance: “It was a very tough fight. There is a lot of racism in this county and champeta was too new – people didn’t understand it, it was a shock, like with any revolution. I remember coming back to Bogota in the mid ‘90s and everybody hated champeta. They all said it was ‘stupid’ music and too sexual. But the lyrics were just covering normal things about life. Bogota was a very white city in the ‘90s – everyone was listening to rock music at the time. Rock music was for rich people and cumbia and champeta were for the poor people.”

Latino Resiste unveils THE HIDDEN RAVES OF CHAMPETESBURG which is a continuing part of the electro-champeta movement we began a decade ago, this time expanding Champeta’s DNA towards newer subgenres which could include Aleteo, House, bits of moombahton, and acoustic champeta..

Each track takes one of the elements most relevants of the genre. Whether the heavily Abelardo Carbono’s influenced guitars, or the Roland Dogs, or the percussive patter or simply its lyrical content, champeta is always expanding, it can’t be contained or defined by just few parameters, and our responsibility in Latino Resiste is to expand our Latin Music diaspora.

Caballo & The Mothafu Kings – #ABSURDUS

absurdus back cover

After 2 years. Caballo is back with a whole new album which he decided to go back to his cumbia bass roots and get them to the new bass level.

The actual concept of the album makes it looks spontaneous. However, the album has been crafted to be perceived differently depending on who is listening to it.

If you are European, African, Asian or North American, you will listen to it differently than a Latino will do; however a Colombian will understand it differently as well.

And of course, I know everyone is different.

But what I mean here is the craft in details, they have been put in a way that is open to recognize elements, in a way, many songs will sound extremely close to you as a listener, or totally bass music, depending on where you are from, or how strong your connection with an identity is.

At the same time, songs will be kinda unorthodox, or will be cohesive depending on how many bass genres you listen to.

The album goes for: FREE DOWNLOAD

A way to contextualize this, might be the opening track CULO E VACILE

The album challenges what Cumbia and latin roots are in terms of sounds, but it also has explicit lyrics and organic sounds that complement the sampling process, a lot of the songs you are about to hear, have real drums.

Champeta, Moombahton, Zouk Bass, Dubstep, and Cumbia Bass are the most common genres that will blend into each other.

Chong X and Caballo get together to give a more cumbia-bass, moombahton mashing up Major Lazer & Chupacabras

This is a champeta collab with Molo Diaz, Kinky Electric Noise and Piper Street Band of Sol Okarina’s contacto, which was one of the best indie songs of last year for the Latino spectrum.

Lyrics and Music are really important, so there are tracks that have been designed to be cohesive with the #absurdus manifesto.

There are 3 songs for all the rebels out there: Belief which is a dubstep, This is now the time which is a Dub- Drum n bass and this epic Collab with Colombian Master PERNETT

But for DJS and/or dancefloor appeal there are few tricks in the album as well.. like a dope edit of WOST’s face to face.

Even a cumbia bass direction in a collaboration between Neki Stranac, Caballo, Carnnibal and yes, the epic Ragga twins

The biggest new genre of 2013-4, Zouk Bass, gets a different approach as well in a JSTJR’s Cerveja

Without losing his political focused releases: Absurd is also trying to open the discussion on 3 main elements that unite people from all over the world.

The gap between rich & poor, the tactics politicians do to remain in power, what media filters to manipulate opinion.

Kinky Electric Noise- Terapia Tropical

001

It’s been over 2 years since the Perreo Digital (A Trip into Electro Champeta) EP was released on Latino Resiste Records.

This album represents a lot for the Champeta universe, as it explores a whole different approach to the genre, shifting away from the explosive Perreo Digital EP, to a more mature sound, respecting the early days of Terapia, and applying current EDM dynamics to reflect and actually fit any global bass/world music party or dj set, or just an amazing trip in your stereo or mp3 player.

Electro Champeta pioneer Kinky Electric Noise was working on his highly anticipated new album Terapia Tropical, which is a strong comeback to the roots of Terapia Criolla.

320’s Right Here

Since then Champeta’s international appeal and notoriety has continued to grow, resulting in a proliferation of compilations, remixes and mixtapes to meet the public’s increasing curiosity and demand.

Continuing the tradition of its predecessor, we recreated and remixed five songs from Champeta’s past, present and “future.”

This time around we decided to incorporate live instruments in the mix, courtesy of Matt Mansfield of Piper Street Sound, in order to add more authenticity and originality to the grooves.

The results transverse the musical spectrum, beginning with the quintessential and later swerving into the unconventional, while still maintaining Champeta as a fundamental influence.

Second track is a BOMB

If you know Terapia Criolla/Champeta, then the name MR BLACK is a usual reference
KEN takes him to the digital era respecting the sound!

A 100% Original Electro Champeta in were we use Papo Man’s Camino a la delincuencia we can find that dope organic beats meet social champeta

Rebelsounds & Latino Resiste present CUERO DIGITAL

The wait is over..
This one brings two active and quiet players to hit a knock out nobody expected!

CUERO DIGITAL, a compilation made by the global activists Rebelsounds and Colombia/Canada Latino Resiste label. which gathers some of the most exciting cumbia players since the digital game started!!
And even better it is set as a FREE DOWNLOAD

Cuero Digital is selection of the most innovative Cumbia producers and some banging tracks from pioneers and new players.

The process, of selection, was very simple as there are not any doubts of the legacy from some of the producers in the compilation.

The opening track, brings Global Bass well known, Maga Bo and Cumbia Queen Petrona Martinez.

Present is also Pernett, whose music has influenced pretty much every cumbiahead in the digital era and even been featured in the grammy award Cumbia de los aburridos by Calle 13, he also has been labeled as one of the most significant additions to Colombia’s neo folklore in the last decade.

Alguacil from dub killer combo is also inside, and he is known for being the guy behind the music of Sargento Garcias’ CUMBIAMUFFIN ALL STARS, alongside Jacobo Velez from La Mojarra Electrica.

Dragao, now going solo, is also featured here, and as a world premiere of his new upcoming album, he drops his track “La luz del sol” as well.; The guy is mostly known for being the composer of Papaya Republik’s music and also Cumbia Rockers All Stars.

One of the most innovative producers is Gux Swadharma, for Cuero Digital he reworks Stereo Mcs hit “Connected” and makes it a dancefloor banger, and the tune features the young cantaora Ailin Calderon, who many people say, can be the next Bomba Estereo, with their project, Candela Machine.

Mexican producer Javier Estrada is also present in the compilation, with his sampuesana-step. Sonido Satanas, show how impressive Mexican Cumbia can be in terms of reaching a radio-wise level while keeping a perfect balance between underground, roots and dancefloor intented composition.

Miami’s Kinky Electric Noise, and Germany’s and TropicalBass very own Andres Digital are widely known for being the best cumbia mashupers in the globe.

KEN

And some of the new players like Panela Sound, Dr Guzman, Territorio Comanche, Makina Kandela, or Nahuatl Sound system prove why cumbia is always expanding towards new territories.

Last but not least the ever-shaping Caballo, whose work in pushing cumbia, with cumbia bass beats andsome other cumbia projects landed his Sancocho e’ Tigre release on the hands of Lee Perry’s, Emch, Dubblestandar.. Subatomic Sound System, being the first Digital Cumbia release picked by the iconic Dub, reggae, post dancehall Label.

Some may have a simple question: what is the difference between Latino Resiste and The Rebel Records?

The main difference is THE REBEL RECORDS releases individual artists who work on a specific or many genres like Den5hion or Chong X, while Latino Resiste is about unveiling underground/no mainstream genres and producers in a specific genre regardless their country, and trying to cover the whole genre with at least one example of a subgenre..

with that been said, in case you missed any of the releases, here they are for Holidays!!

Our first share comes from this super amazing producer, sometimes called “the mexican aphex twin”

Kinky Electric Noise fulfills perfectly all the elements to make champeta and even takes it to the next level, blending champeta and Tuki on their tune WAZAMAYETA

But this album is just the tip of the iceberg of what now Electrochampeta has became!

From Cartagena, Miami, Norway or Moscow, Producers have given Champeta a V.40 update!!
Also on this post we will have exclusive stuff from Bomba Estereo, La Makina del Caribe, Systema Solar.

This is a PREMIERE of what is going to happen with LA MAKINA DEL KARIBE NEW RELEASE.. coming soon!!

In order to sound “champeta” a track needs to have at least 1 out of 3 from the following elements:

1) The champeta is a hybrid style made up of the rhythms of the Caribbean, Cumbia, Compás, Soca, Calypso, Reggae; combined with the sounds of several countries of the African continent, such as Soukous, Mbaqanga, Bikutsi, Highlife, Juju and Congolese rumba. They were intertwined and gave way to a new style in the barrios (districts) of Cartagena (Colombia). The lyrics are usually satirical. It is also known as terapia criolla.

2) Emulate Guitar Patterns from Abelardo Carbono, or Noel Petro or teto Ocampo.
Separately, these 3 gentlemen shifted the whole genre sound with their guitar tone and style. Huge influence on other players.

Here’s an exclusive footage!! Bomba Estereo LIVE!!
and here you can check the guitar style..

When I asked Simon Mejia, Bomba’s Bassist, why they played champeta-like more than any other rhythm on their live sets, he replied: “because you can moshpit with Champeta!!” – Por que la champeta se presta al pogo!!-
Also Bomba’s singer used to do champeta before ..
